Question of the Day
Why do we say, "Never mind," when what we mean is, "Don't mind me this time," or "It's not worth repeating"? I mean, if we got taken literally when we said, "never mind," that would be EXTREMELY annoying. Can you imagine?

Good thing we normally aren't taken literally when we say it. It's kind of an established fact with us that we mean "It's not worth repeating" when we say "Never mind". But now that you bring it up, it IS weird. However (thankfully) I don't know anyone who takes things THAT literally. :)
Fascinating thought!
Perhaps "never mind" arose as a reply to the direct question "what did you just say?" In that case, if "never mind" meant "never mind what I JUST said," it would be fine.
Who knows, really...
